Out on Harwich Conservation Land, in early spring you can watch the herring run. Here’s a fun YouTube video in which you can see the heroic swimmers “jumping” up over the steps in the dam, on their way to calmer waters. Every year these little fish make their way from the ocean up Herring River to spawn. The Harwich Conservation Trust offers walking tours, events, and outdoor activities, with a full map of trails and bike paths available.
The Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT) is a paved bikeway that runs 25 miles from South Dennis to Wellfleet. The terrain is relatively flat with some minor grades in certain sections in the Lower/Outer Cape areas, specifically Orleans and Wellfleet. It easily offers the greatest variety in scenery and natural landscapes of all the regional bike paths.
